Atherton Solar Guide: Howe Bridge Pit Village, Terraced Streets & 10 Verified Installers

10 MCS-certified firms for Atherton town centre, Howe Bridge, Hindsford, Lilford and Hulton.

Atherton is a former coal and cotton town in Wigan borough, about 5 miles from Bolton, 7 from Wigan and 10 from Manchester. Fletcher Burrows built the Howe Bridge model village for his miners in 1873–75, the country’s first pit head baths opened at Gibfield in 1913, and deep mining ended when Chanters Colliery closed in 1966. The last cotton mill shut in 1999, and older, mostly terraced housing still rings the town centre.

This guide is written for Atherton and the M46 district. A 4kW roof here is estimated to produce 3,541 kWh a year, and every unit you use yourself saves 26.49p at the North West price cap. No MCS firm based in Atherton does home solar, so the ten installers below come from Leigh, Hindley, Ince, Worsley and nearby, each checked against its MCS listing and its own website or register entries.

TL;DR: In Atherton a 4kW system should produce around 3,541 kWh a year, worth roughly £650–£745 a year at North West price-cap rates, with payback in about 8.7–10.0 years on a typical £6,490 install. Howe Bridge and Market Place are conservation areas, and grants for eligible homes go through Greater Manchester Combined Authority.

Planning and grid connection in Atherton

  • Howe Bridge conservation areaDesignated on 29 December 1987, it takes in the model village Fletcher Burrows built for his miners in 1873–75 together with St Michael and All Angels church, which is listed Grade II*. In a conservation area, panels fixed to a wall that fronts the road are not permitted development.
  • Market Place conservation areaDesignated on 20 December 1989; the council’s document for it appears to be a consultation draft. Wigan borough has 23 conservation areas in all, including Tyldesley Town Centre, Astley Village and Hindley Town Centre nearby.
  • Listed buildingsAtherton’s listed buildings include Alder House, Chowbent Chapel and Chanters Farmhouse (all Grade II*), the Church of St John the Baptist and Ena Mill (both Grade II). Panels on a listed home need listed building consent as well as any planning permission.
  • Article 4 directionsWe found no Article 4 direction for Atherton itself, although one conservation area document wouldn’t load, so check with Wigan Council. The borough-wide direction from August 2025 covers houses in multiple occupation, not solar. In Leigh, a 2022 direction on parts of The Avenue, Henrietta Street and Church Street removes the right to fit solar or alter roofs that face a highway, waterway or open space.
  • SP Electricity North WestAtherton is on the network of SP Electricity North West (Electricity North West, now part of the Iberdrola group). A typical home system is simply notified to it once fitted under G98; anything larger, or a big battery, may need its consent beforehand under G99.

Solar Panels Funded

MCS networkResidential & commercialFunding specialists

Solar Panels Funded is a Birmingham-based solar intermediary at Digbeth Court Business Centre, 162–164 High Street, Birmingham, B12 0LD. It doesn’t install panels itself; it matches Atherton homeowners with MCS-accredited installers from its network, so one enquiry brings back several quotes.

Because no home-solar installer is based in M46, it can draw on firms across Leigh, Hindley and the wider North West, and ask them early whether a house falls in the Howe Bridge or Market Place conservation areas.

2

TJS Solar

MCSIAANICEICWhich? Trusted Trader

TJS Solar, the trading name of TJS Electrical Ltd, is a family business founded in Leigh by Tony Sinclair. It fits home solar with batteries, including Sigenergy’s SigenStor combined inverter, battery and EV unit, plus EV chargers, and says every job is done by its own in-house team. Its site also lists Octopus Trusted Partner and Tesla Certified status.

Its MCS listing shows 5.0 from 32 Google reviews, which name Tony, the surveyor Garry and Dan, who deals with DNO updates. The website names Greater Manchester and the North West rather than Atherton, so confirm it covers your street.

Best for A highly rated Leigh family firm using its own fitters.

3

Spectra Solar Ltd

MCSNAPITTrustMarkBUS registered

Spectra Solar is a Hindley company incorporated in November 2021 that installs solar PV, battery storage and air-source heat pumps. It describes itself as family-run, says it employs no sales reps and does not subcontract installations, and is registered for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Its MCS listing shows 4.9 from 145 Google reviews, the largest count on this list, with reviewers praising the lack of sales pressure. Its About page gives inconsistent experience claims, its area list doesn’t name Atherton, and a separately certified Spectra Energy Solutions shares its address, so check which company your contract is with.

Best for Buyers who want plenty of reviews and no sales visit.

4

Grant Store Ltd

MCSNICEICGas SafeBUS registered

Grant Store, incorporated in 2017, works from a business park in Ince and installs solar and batteries for homes and businesses alongside heat pumps and heating, with finance available. Brands it lists include Jinko, JA Solar, Huawei, GivEnergy, Fox ESS, SolarEdge and Tesla, and it says it works across England.

Its MCS listing shows 4.3 from 62 Google reviews, though most of the sample reviews are about heating work. Its registered office is in Manchester rather than Ince, and solar is one strand of a heating-led business, so ask for recent solar references.

Best for Homes weighing solar and a heat pump together.

5

DOC Solar & Electrical Limited

MCSNAPITHIES

DOC Solar & Electrical is a Haigh company formed in August 2023, with Craig Green as director, fitting residential and commercial solar and batteries around Wigan and the North West. It publishes a sample package of Longi 430W panels, a Sunsynk 3.6 hybrid inverter and a 5.2 battery at £7,500, subject to a site inspection.

Its MCS listing carries no rating; its own site shows eight Google reviews. The site claims 14+ years of solar work and more than 300 Wigan installs in 2010–2013, before this company existed, so ask how that earlier trading relates to it.

Best for A quote with a published starting price.

6

Elite Electrical (NW) Ltd

MCSNICEICCHAS

Elite Electrical (NW) is an Ince electrical contractor offering solar PV for homes and businesses, along with general domestic and commercial electrics, EICRs and CCTV, across a 60-mile radius of Wigan. It has held Silver status in Wigan’s Believe in Business Charter since March 2025.

It has no reviews on its MCS listing, and its site gives no founding date, owner or panel brands. Its MCS listing and the council directory show different phone numbers, so ask for examples of finished solar jobs.

Best for A general electrician who also fits solar.

7

Prism Distribution Ltd

MCSNAPITRECCBUS registered

Prism Distribution, based in Leigh, specialises in grant-funded retrofit work across social, owner-occupied and privately rented homes, with UK-wide coverage. Its measures include solar PV with batteries, air-source heat pumps, high heat retention storage heaters and insulation, and its site shows IAA, PAS 2030, Constructionline Silver and SafeContractor logos.

It has no reviews on its MCS listing and gives no founding date. It is a retrofit contractor rather than a retail solar firm, so it may suit a grant-funded job better than a straightforward private purchase.

Best for Households going down a grant-funded retrofit route.

8

All Eco Energy Solutions Limited

MCSSimply Certification

All Eco Energy Solutions is listed at Hodge Road in the Walkden South ward of Salford and holds MCS certification for solar PV and battery storage.

It has no reviews on its MCS listing, its website failed to load on three attempts and we found nothing else about it, so check its insurance, references and a written specification before booking a survey.

Best for An extra quote from the Salford side.

9

Timesgroup Ltd

MCSNAPIT

Timesgroup is a Leigh building services company with more than 35 staff, including 18 engineers and six apprentices, led by managing director Jack Law. It covers mechanical, electrical, renewables, gas, facilities management and cleaning, with clients such as the NHS, Nuffield Health and Boots, and is MCS certified for solar PV, batteries and heat pumps.

It has no reviews on its MCS listing and its site states no accreditations. Most of its work is commercial, and although residential developments appear as a sector, we couldn’t confirm it takes on single homes.

Best for Larger or mixed-use properties.

10

DW Hargreaves Electrical Contractors Ltd

MCSNICEIC

DW Hargreaves Electrical Contractors works from Chadwick House in Birchwood, on the Warrington side of the area, and is MCS certified for solar PV and battery storage.

Its MCS listing shows 5.0 from four Google reviews, but the one shown is about a light fitting and a bathroom rather than solar. We found no website, so ask to see solar work it has done.

Best for An electrician’s quote from the Birchwood side.

11

Bolton Electrical Services

MCSNICEIC

Despite its name, Bolton Electrical Services is listed at an address in Aspull, north-east of Wigan, and holds MCS certification for solar PV.

It has no reviews on its MCS listing and we found no website. Companies House has a similarly named company, now BES Electrical Fire & Security Ltd in Horwich, but we couldn’t confirm the two are linked, so ask for company details with any quote.

Best for A small-firm quote to test prices against.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a grant for solar panels in Atherton?

For Wigan borough, the Warm Homes: Local Grant comes through Greater Manchester Combined Authority, with solar PV and battery storage on its list of measures. Owner-occupiers can get up to £15,000 for energy performance work plus up to £15,000 more for low-carbon heating. You may qualify with an EPC of D to G and gross household income under £36,000, an eligible postcode, means-tested benefits, or an ECO4 Flex route such as a referral from Wigan’s AWARM team. GMCA doesn’t say whether the scheme is currently open, and publishes email addresses but no phone line, so check the GMCA retrofit portal for the latest position.

Do I need planning permission for panels in Howe Bridge or the town centre?

Atherton has two conservation areas: Howe Bridge, designated in 1987, and Market Place, designated in 1989. Roof panels are often still allowed there without an application, but a wall-mounted array facing the street isn’t, and listed buildings such as Chowbent Chapel or Alder House need consent. We found no Article 4 direction for Atherton, unlike central Leigh, where a 2022 direction brings roadside solar on some streets under planning control. Wigan Council can confirm the position for your address.

How much electricity will a 4kW system make in Atherton?

PVGIS models about 3,541 kWh a year here for a south-facing 4kW array, a little more than the 3,481 kWh it gives for Bolton and the 3,444 kWh for Manchester. Output tops out at roughly 461 kWh in May and drops to around 106 kWh in December, so expect most of your free power between spring and early autumn.

What would solar save on an Atherton electricity bill?

Every unit the panels supply directly saves 26.49p, this quarter’s North West price-cap rate, and spare power sold back earns 13p. For a household that soaks up 40–60% of its 4kW output, that adds up to about £650–£745 a year, which would cover a £6,490 installation after roughly 8.7–10.0 years.

Are there public or community solar projects near Atherton?

Howe Bridge leisure centre in Atherton was one of the first of Wigan’s Be Well centres to get solar PV, and Robin Park Leisure Centre now has more than 600 panels. The council also reports solar on nearly 1,500 social homes. We found no community energy group in the borough, and Greater Manchester’s last Solar Together group-buy ran in 2019, with no newer round found.

Does Atherton’s mining history matter for a solar installation?

Deep mining in Atherton ended in 1966 with the closure of Chanters Colliery, and the Church of St John the Baptist was damaged by subsidence. Most homes won’t be affected, but if yours has cracks or a sagging roofline, ask the surveyor to check the rafters and roof structure before panels and mounts are added.

Why isn’t there an installer based in Atherton itself?

The only MCS-certified solar firm with an Atherton address is a commercial mechanical and electrical contractor, and we couldn’t confirm it does home installs. The nearest domestic firms are in Leigh, a couple of miles away, with others in Hindley and Ince. If you live on the Hulton side of M46, note that it lies in Bolton borough, so Bolton Council, not Wigan, deals with planning there.

Final Thoughts

In Atherton, start by checking whether your home is in the Howe Bridge or Market Place conservation area or is listed, and whether your household might qualify for the GMCA grant before you pay for a system yourself.

Get at least three quotes, ideally including one of the Leigh firms, and compare each installer’s output estimate for your roof with the 3,541 kWh figure above.
