Bolton Solar Guide: Cotton-Mill Heritage, Winter Hill Views & 10 Verified Installers
10 MCS-certified firms for central Bolton, Horwich, Westhoughton, Farnworth, Little Lever and Bromley Cross.
Bolton grew as a cotton town about 10 miles north-west of Manchester, and at its peak in 1929 it had 216 cotton mills and 26 bleaching and dyeing works. The Grade II* Town Hall on Victoria Square was opened by the Prince of Wales in 1873, and most views to the north are dominated by Rivington Pike and the Winter Hill TV mast on the West Pennine Moors.
This guide covers the BL1–BL7 districts, from Horwich and Westhoughton to Farnworth and Bromley Cross. A 4kW roof here is estimated to produce 3,481 kWh a year, and every unit you use yourself saves 26.49p at the North West price cap. Below are ten MCS-certified installers listed at BL addresses, each checked against its directory entry, its own website and other review sites where we found them.

Planning and grid connection in Bolton
- 26 conservation areasBolton Council has 26 conservation areas, among them Town Hall, Churchgate, Deansgate, Mawdsley Street, Silverwell Street and Wood Street, and Barrow Bridge. Under national permitted development rules, panels on a wall that fronts a road in a conservation area need planning permission.
- Barrow Bridge Article 4Barrow Bridge, designated in 1976, is the only conservation area in the borough with an Article 4 direction. We couldn’t confirm whether it covers roofs or solar, so ask the council before fitting panels there.
- Listed buildingsThe borough has around 700 listed buildings, more than 230 of them in central Bolton, including the Grade II* Town Hall. Panels on a listed home need listed building consent.
- Local planBolton adopted Places for Everyone, the joint plan for nine Greater Manchester districts, in March 2024. A new Bolton Local Plan is being prepared after a Direction of Travel consultation that closed in January 2026. A separate 2025 Article 4 direction covers HMO conversions only, not solar.
- SP Electricity North WestBolton’s local grid is run by Electricity North West, now trading as SP Electricity North West and part of the Iberdrola group. A typical home array is reported to it after connection under G98; bigger systems, often those with large batteries, need its consent beforehand under G99.

Solar Panels Funded
MCS networkResidential & commercialFunding specialists
Solar Panels Funded is a Birmingham-based solar intermediary at Digbeth Court Business Centre, 162–164 High Street, Birmingham, B12 0LD. It doesn’t install panels itself; it matches Bolton homeowners with MCS-accredited installers from its network, so one enquiry brings back several quotes.
With installers spread from Blackrod to Bromley Cross, it can ask several to price a terraced or semi-detached roof side by side, and flag early whether a home in Barrow Bridge or another conservation area needs a planning check.
Best for One enquiry → multiple competitive quotes from vetted MCS-accredited installers.
Flux Solar Energy
MCSNAPITTrustMarkRECC
Flux Solar Energy is a Westhoughton company, incorporated in June 2023, that fits solar and batteries on detached, semi-detached and terraced homes; it says it can’t yet fit panels on flats or apartments. Its website shows a Tesla Energy Certified Installer badge and case studies from Horwich, Wigan, Stockport, Preston and Chorley.
Its MCS listing shows 5.0 from 5 Google reviews. One describes 17 panels and a 12kW battery fitted in a day, and another a Tesla Powerwall it put right after another firm wired it wrongly. That is a small sample from a firm under three years old.
Best for Panels and a battery on a terraced or semi-detached house.
The Solar + Storage Company
MCSNAPITTrustMark
GGB Elec Services trades as The Solar + Storage Company from Bromley Cross, fitting solar PV, batteries and EV chargers with brands including Qcells, JA Solar, Trina, Jinko, Solis, SolaX, Fox ESS and Growatt. It publishes package prices: from £5,199 for 3.2kW of panels, and £7,899 for 4.9kW of panels with a 5.3kW battery.
There are no reviews on its MCS listing, and its site gives no founding year or coverage area. Use the phone number on its website (01204 232231); the directory shows a different one that looks like a typo.
Best for Clear published prices for panels with a battery.
Jax Group North West
MCSNICEICWhich? Trusted Trader
Jax Group North West is a director-led Bolton electrical firm founded by Adam Kirkman. It fits solar panels and battery storage for homes and businesses alongside general electrical work, and names Bolton, Chorley, Bury, Darwen, Leyland, Ramsbottom and Preston as areas it covers.
Its MCS listing has no reviews, but Which? Trusted Traders shows 5.0 from 9, including a full solar, inverter and battery job. The directory doesn’t link its website, which gives 01204 205043.
Best for A Which?-vetted Bolton electrician for solar and storage.
Voltari Services
MCSNAPITNICEICSafeContractor
Voltari Services, incorporated in February 2022, works from the Nortex Business Centre on Chorley Old Road and lists solar PV, batteries, EV charging and heat pumps; it says it is a certified Tesla Powerwall installer. Bolton Council and Bolton Wanderers FC logos appear among the clients on its site.
Its MCS listing shows 4.9 from 14 Google reviews, one mentioning electrical work for solar panels. The website leans towards commercial and EV work, with solar under ‘EV & Solar’ rather than its domestic menu, and it describes a UK-wide network of 200+ electricians, so ask who would fit your system.
Best for Solar alongside an EV charger or Powerwall.
Concept Heating Systems
MCSNICEICTrustMarkBUS registered
Concept Heating Systems is a heating-led firm offering solar PV for homes and businesses alongside air-source heat pumps, boilers and insulation. It claims over ten years in social housing work across Lancashire, Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire. Its directory listing includes battery storage, which its website doesn’t mention.
Its MCS listing shows 4.4 from 64 Google reviews, mostly about boilers and insulation, including a 1-star review of an underfloor insulation job. The directory gives this Little Lever address, but the firm’s own site gives Unit 38a, Eton Hill Road, Radcliffe M26 2ZS in Bury, so check where your job would be run from.
Best for Solar as part of a wider heating or insulation upgrade.
Nightingale Electrical
MCSNICEICRECC
Nightingale Electrical is an NICEIC-approved Blackrod electrician with a 24/7 emergency call-out service. Its website offers solar PV upgrades and inverter replacements, says it covers Bolton, the North West and the wider UK, and carries a testimonial naming Craig and his team.
There are no reviews on its MCS listing. Solar is a sideline to general electrical work, the website doesn’t mention batteries although the directory does, and the two sources give slightly different postcodes (BL6 5JP and BL6 5JW) and phone numbers.
Best for Replacing a failed inverter or upgrading an older array.
Clique Energy
MCSNICEIC
Clique Energy calls itself a family-run business that has been installing renewables since 2014, and on Bridge Street it is the closest MCS firm to Bolton town centre. It fits solar PV and EV chargers, reviewers also mention battery installs, and it says it is on Facebook as Bolton Solar.
Its MCS listing has no reviews, but The Renewable Energy Hub shows 5 stars from 11. We found no website, so ask for references, insurance details and a written specification. Phone 01204 528672.
Best for A town-centre family firm with over a decade in renewables.
Planetbloom
MCSNAPITRECC
Planetbloom sells solar panels, battery storage, insulation and heat pumps to homes and businesses across the UK. Its website says it is an FCA-authorised credit broker (FRN 1057643), so it can arrange finance.
Its site shows 4.2 from 6 reviews; its MCS listing has none. The site names no staff or brands, and while the directory lists this Bromley Cross address, the website gives Unit 10, Admiral Business Park, Eccles M30 0ZW, so ask where installs are run from and who carries them out.
Best for Solar or a battery with finance arranged through the firm.
Skilled Force
MCSNICEIC
Skilled Force is a Farnworth firm certified for solar PV and batteries. The one review shown on its listing covers loft insulation, new heaters and solar panels in a single job, which looks like grant-funded retrofit work.
Its MCS listing shows 3.0 from 2 Google reviews; the one shown says a scaffolder broke a roof tile, which the firm replaced. We found no website, so ask for references and recent solar jobs. Phone 01204 214399.
Best for Retrofit packages that bundle solar with insulation.
Seddon Construction
MCSNICEIC
Seddon Construction is part of the family-owned Seddon Group, which has its UK head office in Bolton, and holds MCS certification for solar PV and batteries. In 2011 it fitted a 49 kWp array to its own Bolton head office, expected to cut 21.1 tonnes of CO2 a year.
There are no reviews on its MCS listing and no website linked there. It is a construction contractor rather than a domestic installer, so it suits larger roofs or building projects better than a single house; ask whether it takes on home jobs. Phone 01204 570400.
Best for Larger roofs, or solar as part of building work.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there grant funding for solar in Bolton?
Possibly. In Bolton the Warm Homes: Local Grant is handled by GMCA, the combined authority, and it can fund solar PV and battery storage. Owner-occupiers in homes rated EPC D to G may qualify through benefits, a household income under £36,000 or a deprived postcode. Bolton Council lists the scheme as open, but its area-based route is by GMCA invitation only, and the council says the GMCA approved installers have no funding left for new applications. Bolton Care and Repair (01204 328177) can help you check your options.
Do I need permission for panels in Barrow Bridge or other Bolton conservation areas?
Bolton has 26 conservation areas, and Barrow Bridge is the only one with an Article 4 direction. We couldn’t find what that direction controls, so ask the council before planning panels there. Elsewhere in a conservation area, roof panels are normally permitted development, but a wall-mounted array facing a road is not, and any listed home needs listed building consent. The borough-wide Article 4 made in 2025 deals with HMOs, not solar.
How much electricity do panels produce in Bolton?
PVGIS models a south-facing 4kW system in Bolton at about 3,481 kWh over a year. That is roughly 60 kWh below Atherton, to the south-west, and just above both Bury and central Manchester. Expect around 453 kWh in May, the best month, and only about 101 kWh in December.
What would solar save on a Bolton electricity bill?
Bolton bills are capped at 26.49p a kWh this autumn. Self-consume somewhere near half of a 4kW array’s yearly output (we model 40 to 60 per cent), export the remainder for 13p, and the system is worth roughly £640–£735 annually. Payback on £6,490 then lands between 8.8 and 10.1 years.
Are there solar projects or community energy schemes in Bolton?
There are several public projects. In 2016 the council had panels fitted at four of its buildings, including Leverhulme Sports Centre and Laburnum Lodge Care Home, Farnworth Leisure Centre won £126,000 for solar in 2024, and Royal Bolton Hospital was awarded over £300,000 in 2025 for 310 panels. We found no Bolton community energy group, and the Solar Together Greater Manchester group-buy that ran in 2019 does not appear to be running now.
Can I get solar on a terraced house or a flat in Bolton?
Usually a terrace is fine: Flux Solar Energy, for example, lists terraced homes alongside detached and semi-detached ones. Flats are harder: Flux says it can’t yet fit flats or apartments, so ask each firm directly and check who owns the roof.
Why do some Bolton installers show a different address on their website?
Two firms here are listed on the MCS-linked directory at BL addresses but give other bases online: Concept Heating names Radcliffe in Bury, and Planetbloom names Eccles. That isn’t necessarily a problem, but ask where the fitting team is based, how quickly they can return for aftercare and whether they use subcontractors.
Final Thoughts
Before you book a survey in Bolton, find out whether your home sits in Barrow Bridge or one of the other conservation areas, and whether it is listed. If you might qualify for the GMCA grant, speak to Bolton Care and Repair before paying for anything yourself.
Get at least three quotes, including one from a firm based in the BL postcodes, and compare each installer’s yield estimate for your roof with the 3,481 kWh figure above.
