Barnard Castle Solar Guide: Stone Roofs, Teesdale Villages & 10 Verified Installers

10 MCS-certified firms for Barnard Castle, Startforth and the Teesdale villages, with output worked out for the town.

Barnard Castle is a stone-built market town at the gateway to Teesdale, where most of the historic buildings date from the 18th century and three of them, the castle, the Bowes Museum and the Market Cross, are Grade I listed. It is also about to get one of County Durham’s more unusual solar projects: a solar farm at Stainton built to power the GSK medicines plant that employs around 1,000 people in the town.

This guide is written for Barnard Castle and the DL12 villages. A 4kW roof here is estimated to produce 3,648 kWh a year, and at the Northern price cap each unit you use yourself saves 25.46p. Below are ten MCS-certified installers that cover the town, three of them based in Teesdale itself, each checked against the MCS listings and its own site or register entries.

TL;DR: A 4kW system in Barnard Castle is estimated to produce about 3,648 kWh a year, worth roughly £655–£745 a year at Northern price-cap rates, paying back in about 8.7–9.9 years on a typical £6,490 install. The conservation area and listed buildings in the centre need a planning check first.

Solar in Barnard Castle by the numbers

These are Barnard Castle figures, not a national average. PVGIS puts a 4kW, south-facing, 35° roof system in the town at 3,648 kWh a year, rising to about 465 kWh in May and falling to 107 kWh in December.

Planning and grid connection in Barnard Castle

  • Barnard Castle conservation areaDesignated in 1975 and amended in 2013, it covers the historic centre including Galgate, Horse Market, The Bank, Newgate and Bridgegate. Here panels on a wall or roof facing a highway are not permitted development.
  • Three Grade I landmarksThe castle (also a scheduled monument), the Bowes Museum and the 1747 Market Cross are all Grade I listed. Any listed building needs consent before panels go on.
  • No Article 4 directionDurham County Council’s Article 4 directions cover places such as Durham City, Wolsingham and West Auckland, but none in Barnard Castle, so normal conservation-area rules apply.
  • North Pennines National LandscapeMuch of upper Teesdale lies inside this protected landscape, where the same limits on road-facing panels apply. Check the official boundary map for your village.
  • Northern PowergridBarnard Castle is on Northern Powergrid’s Northeast network. Most home systems are notified after installation (G98); larger ones need approval first (G99).

Solar Panels Funded

MCS networkResidential & commercialFunding specialists

Solar Panels Funded is a Birmingham-based solar intermediary at Digbeth Court Business Centre, 162–164 High Street, Birmingham, B12 0LD. It doesn’t fit panels itself; it matches Barnard Castle homeowners with MCS-accredited installers from its network, so one enquiry brings back several quotes.

For Teesdale, that means finding firms willing to travel up the dale and experienced with stone and slate roofs. It can also check whether an off-gas-grid home is likely to qualify for County Durham’s Warm Homes grant before you pay for anything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Warm Homes grant for solar in Barnard Castle?

Yes. Durham County Council has £2 million of Warm Homes: Local Grant money over three years for owner-occupied and privately rented homes rated EPC D–G, with E–G prioritised, where household income is under £36,000 or someone gets a means-tested benefit. Esh Construction is delivering it for up to 140 homes off the gas grid, and solar PV is on the list of measures, which suits many Teesdale properties. Apply through Warm Homes Durham on 03000 268 000 or warmhomes@durham.gov.uk.

Can I put panels on a building near the castle or the Bowes Museum?

Probably only with consent. The castle, the Bowes Museum and the Market Cross are all Grade I listed, and the surrounding streets are in the Barnard Castle conservation area. Panels on a listed building always need listed building consent, and in the conservation area any on a wall or roof facing a road need planning permission. Roofs on the rear slope of an unlisted house are often fine.

Do the North Pennines rules affect solar in Teesdale?

They can. Large parts of Teesdale are in the North Pennines National Landscape, the former AONB designated in 1988. In a National Landscape, as in a conservation area, you can’t fit panels on a wall or roof slope facing a road under permitted development. Villages further up the dale are more likely to be inside, so check the boundary map for your address.

What is the GSK solar farm at Barnard Castle?

It is a solar farm of up to 16MW on land at Stainton, next to GSK’s plant off the A688, planned to supply around 52% of the site’s electricity. Durham County Council approved it in January 2025 for a 40-year life, with a community fund of £15,000 a year for local projects.

How much electricity will panels make in Barnard Castle?

PVGIS modelling for the town gives about 3,648 kWh a year from a 4kW array facing south at 35°. Output climbs to around 465 kWh in May and falls to about 107 kWh in December. That is roughly 2% below the figure for Chester-le-Street, even though Barnard Castle is further south.

How much could a Barnard Castle home save?

The town is in the Northern price-cap region, where electricity costs 25.46p per unit from October to December 2026. If you use 40–60% of what a 4kW system makes and export the rest at 13p, it’s worth about £655–£745 a year, which pays back a £6,490 installation in 8.7–9.9 years.

Can solar panels go on an old stone house in Barnard Castle?

Usually, but plan for the roof. Durham County Council notes that most of the town’s historic buildings are 18th century, with stone walls and roofs of stone slate or natural Welsh slate. Fixing panels to stone slates needs more care than on modern tiles, so ask each installer how they will attach the mounts and replace any broken slates.

Final Thoughts

In Barnard Castle, the building comes first. If your home is listed or in the town’s conservation area, or your village is in the North Pennines National Landscape, speak to Durham County Council before inviting quotes. Elsewhere in DL12, most roofs can go ahead under permitted development.

Get at least three quotes, including one from a Teesdale-based firm, and ask for a roof-specific output estimate to compare with the 3,648 kWh figure above. If you are off the gas grid on a lower income, contact Warm Homes Durham first.
