Matlock Solar Guide: Spa-Town Roofs, World Heritage Rules & 10 Verified Installers
10 MCS-certified firms for Matlock Bank, Darley Dale, Cromford and the rest of DE4, plus a note on Repton.
Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire: County Hall sits in the former Smedley’s Hydro on Matlock Bank, and the district council runs Derbyshire Dales from the Town Hall on Bank Road. For solar, the town’s setting matters as much as its roofs. The Peak District National Park starts just to the west, and Matlock Bath and Cromford to the south are part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
This guide is built for Matlock itself. A 4kW roof here is estimated to produce 3,652 kWh a year, and at the East Midlands price cap each unit you use yourself saves 25.36p. Below are ten MCS-certified installers that work in DE4, two of them based on the edge of town, each checked against the MCS listings and its own site or register entries.

Solar in Matlock by the numbers
These figures are modelled for Matlock, not a UK average. A 4kW, south-facing system at 35° is estimated to produce 3,652 kWh a year, with a peak of about 464 kWh in May and 106 kWh in December.
- 3,652 kWh / yearEstimated output of a 4kW roof system in Matlock
- 25.36p per kWhPrice-cap unit rate for Matlock’s region (East Midlands), Oct–Dec 2026, vs 26.32p GB average
- £370–£555 off your billIf you use 40–60% of what the panels make at home
- + £190–£285 export incomeThe rest sold at 13p/kWh on an open Smart Export Guarantee tariff
That works out at roughly £655–£745 a year, repaying a £6,490 install in about 8.7–9.9 years. Matlock sits in the Derwent valley on the line where the Dark Peak gritstone meets the White Peak limestone, and its yield lands between Belper’s lower valley and the higher, cloudier ground around Buxton.

Planning and grid connection in Matlock
- Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage SiteInscribed in 2001, it runs about 15 miles from Matlock Bath to Derby and takes in Cromford and Masson Mill. In a World Heritage Site or conservation area, panels on a wall or roof facing a highway are not permitted development.
- Matlock Bath conservation areaMatlock Bath is a conservation area and has an Article 4 direction covering properties there, which can remove householder rights. Check with Derbyshire Dales planning before booking a survey.
- Peak District National ParkThe park boundary lies directly west of Matlock. The town itself is outside it, but for homes inside the park the Peak District National Park Authority, not the district council, decides on planning.
- Listed buildingsDerbyshire Dales has more than 1,325 listed buildings outside the national park, including County Hall. Any listed building needs consent before panels go on.
- National Grid Electricity DistributionMatlock is in NGED’s East Midlands area. Most home systems are notified after installation (G98); larger systems need approval first (G99).

Repton: solar in a Saxon village
Repton, in South Derbyshire (DE65), is folded into this guide because it has no separate one yet. The village centre is a conservation area built around St Wystan’s Church, whose 8th-century crypt was a burial place of Mercian kings and is Grade I listed, and Repton School, founded under Sir John Port’s will in 1557 inside the remains of the Augustinian priory. The historic core is a conservation area, so panels on a wall facing the road need permission; roof panels are usually permitted development but should be placed where they are least visible.
Repton is about five miles from Burton upon Trent and Swadlincote and ten from Derby, and it is on the NGED East Midlands network, so the 25.36p unit rate above applies there too. Two MCS firms fit well: Howitt Electrical Services (NAP-70628), based next door in Willington, and Midland Solar (NAP-77288) from Tamworth, which has a page written for Repton that discusses its heritage buildings. For more installers south of Derby, see our Derby solar guide.

Solar Panels Funded
MCS networkResidential & commercialFunding specialists
Solar Panels Funded is a Birmingham-based solar intermediary at Digbeth Court Business Centre, 162–164 High Street, Birmingham, B12 0LD. It doesn’t install panels itself; it matches Matlock homeowners with MCS-accredited installers from its network, so a single enquiry brings back several quotes.
In Matlock it can steer you to installers used to stone and slate roofs on steep hillside plots, and flag early if your address is in the World Heritage Site, a conservation area or the national park. It can also check whether you are likely to qualify for the Warm Homes grant once Derbyshire Dales reopens applications.
Best for One enquiry → multiple competitive quotes from vetted MCS-accredited installers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a Warm Homes grant for solar in Matlock?
Not straight away. Derbyshire Dales belongs to the Midlands Net Zero Hub group for the Warm Homes: Local Grant, and Marches Energy Agency handles residents’ enquiries for the district. When we checked, it was not taking applications but was letting people register interest on 0800 677 1307. Solar PV is an eligible measure under the national rules for owners and private renters in EPC D–G homes on lower incomes, and delivery runs to 31 March 2028.
Is Matlock inside the Peak District National Park?
No. The park boundary lies directly west of the town, so most Matlock homes deal with Derbyshire Dales District Council for planning. Villages over that line, including parts of the Dales towards Bakewell, fall under the Peak District National Park Authority, which says renewable installations there may need planning permission.
Can I fit panels on a house in Matlock Bath or Cromford?
Often, but with more checks than elsewhere. Both villages belong to the World Heritage Site that follows the Derwent from Matlock Bath down to Derby, and inside it panels on a wall facing a road need permission, while roof panels are normally permitted development if they are placed to keep their visual impact down. Matlock Bath is also a conservation area with an Article 4 direction on its properties, and Cromford has listed mill buildings and workers’ cottages on North Street. Get the council’s view before an installer designs the system.
How much will a solar system generate in Matlock?
Modelled with PVGIS, four kilowatts of south-facing panels tilted at 35° on a Matlock roof should give around 3,652 kWh annually. That’s roughly 3% below Belper, lower down the Derwent, and about 4% above Buxton up in the Peak. Generation tops out near 464 kWh in May and sinks to around 106 kWh in December.
What will solar save on a Matlock electricity bill?
Matlock households are billed at East Midlands cap rates, 25.36p per kWh this autumn, cheaper than any other region. Consuming 40–60% of the panels’ generation at home and selling the remainder at 13p comes to about £655–£745 a year, so a £6,490 system would pay for itself in 8.7–9.9 years.
What is Derbyshire Dales council doing about solar?
The district declared a climate emergency in May 2019 and set a target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. It has 355 roof-mounted panels on the Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell and solar on two other council sites, and part of Matlock Town Hall’s heating now comes from heat pumps, which has cut its gas use by more than 40%.
Is Derbyshire County Council building any solar?
Yes, though not in Matlock itself. The county council, which is headquartered at County Hall on Matlock Bank, is building a 2MW solar farm on the old Williamthorpe Colliery site near Chesterfield with £700,000 from the East Midlands mayoral renewables fund. It is expected to generate around 1.9 million kWh a year, enough for more than 700 homes.
Final Thoughts
In Matlock, check your address before you check prices. If you are in Matlock Bath, Cromford, another conservation area or the national park, or your home is listed, talk to the planning authority first. Elsewhere in DE4, most roofs can take panels under permitted development.
Ask at least three installers for a quote and a roof-specific output estimate to set against the 3,652 kWh figure above. If your income is under £36,000 and your EPC rating is D or lower, register with Marches Energy Agency so you hear when the Warm Homes grant reopens.
