Chelmsford Solar Guide: Marconi’s City, Longfield’s Neighbour & 10 Verified Installers
10 MCS-certified firms for Chelmsford, Springfield, Great Baddow, Writtle, Broomfield and the CM1–CM3 villages.
Chelmsford was home to Marconi’s first wireless factory and became a city in June 2012. It is still growing, with the new Beaulieu Park station opening in October 2025 to serve the estates north-east of the centre. Just beyond them, between Boreham and Hatfield Peverel, the Longfield Solar Farm, of up to 500MW, has national consent.
This guide is written for Chelmsford. A 4kW roof here is estimated to produce 4,131 kWh a year, and at the Eastern price cap each unit you use yourself saves 26.61p. Chelmsford has an unusually strong local market: below are ten MCS-certified installers, three of them within a mile of the city centre, each checked against the MCS listings and its own site or register entries.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get help paying for solar in Chelmsford?
Chelmsford is among 13 Essex councils taking part in HEAT Essex. Happy Energy Solutions delivers that Warm Homes: Local Grant programme, and solar PV is one of the upgrades it can pay for. You don’t have to claim benefits: income, health, the property and its EPC are all weighed up. Demand has been very high, and in October 2026 HEAT Essex warned that some applications might be put on hold, so apply early on 01206 326808.
Which parts of Chelmsford are conservation areas?
There are 26 across the council area. In the city they include Chelmsford Central, Moulsham Street, New London Road, West End, Springfield Green, Baddow Road and River Can, and in the villages Great Baddow, Writtle, Broomfield, Boreham and Danbury. In those areas, panels on any roof slope or wall that faces the road need planning permission first.
What is the Longfield Solar Farm?
It is a nationally significant solar and battery project of up to 500MW, planned on farmland just north-east of the city, beyond the A12 and stretching from Boreham towards Hatfield Peverel. Consent was granted on 26 June 2023, with an amendment order in February 2026. It is separate from home solar and has no effect on your own roof or export payments.
Can I join a group-buying scheme for solar in Chelmsford?
Yes. Essex County Council has partnered with iChoosr on Switch Together (previously called Solar Together). Households across the county register, then approved installers bid in an auction. Sign-ups for panels and batteries were open in October 2026; it costs nothing to register and you are free to turn the offer down.
Why are there so many solar installers in Chelmsford?
Chelmsford has one of the busiest local markets we’ve seen. Nanopro-tech, OJF Electrical and CT Solar are all within a mile of the centre, and several more work from Sandon, Boreham and the Hanningfields. That makes it easy to get three or four genuinely local quotes.
How much will panels generate on a Chelmsford roof?
In Chelmsford, PVGIS estimates that 4kW of panels facing due south and pitched at 35° would produce roughly 4,131 kWh annually. That is close to Braintree and a touch above Brentwood. July is the peak, at around 500 kWh, while December manages about 145 kWh.
How much would a Chelmsford household save with solar?
For the last quarter of 2026 the Eastern price cap is 26.61p per kWh. Run the house on 40–60% of its own solar output, export what’s left at 13p, and you would be about £760–£875 a year better off; at that rate a £6,490 installation is cleared in roughly 7.4–8.5 years.
Final Thoughts
In Chelmsford, check whether you are in one of the 26 conservation areas or a listed building before booking surveys; if so, talk to the city council’s planning team. Elsewhere, most roofs can go ahead under permitted development.
With so many local firms, get at least three quotes and compare each installer’s output estimate with the 4,131 kWh figure above. Register with HEAT Essex and Switch Together if cost is the main barrier.
