Frequently Asked Questions
Is there grant funding for solar panels in Chigwell?
There may be, though not straight away. Epping Forest is among the 13 Essex districts in HEAT Essex, Happy Energy Solutions’ Warm Homes: Local Grant scheme, and its list of measures includes solar PV systems and battery storage. Household income, health and the home’s energy rating are assessed, and being on benefits isn’t required. In October 2026 HEAT Essex called itself temporarily oversubscribed, so register now and expect a wait.
Can I put panels on a house in Chigwell Village?
Yes, with some limits. The Chigwell Village conservation area runs along the old coaching route on the High Road and includes Grade II* buildings such as Chigwell School, the King’s Head, St Mary’s Church and Grange Court. In the conservation area, panels facing the road need permission, and listed buildings need listed building consent. Rear roof slopes on unlisted houses are usually fine.
My IG7 address is in Hainault. Do the same rules apply?
Not quite. IG7 4 is on the Hainault side, inside the London Borough of Redbridge, so Redbridge Council rather than Epping Forest handles planning, and HEAT Essex doesn’t cover it. The installers in this guide still work there.
Are there extra planning restrictions on Chigwell homes?
Fewer than you might think. Epping Forest’s Article 4 directions cover a handful of sites in Loughton, Waltham Abbey, Nazeing, Sheering and Buckhurst Hill, none in Chigwell. The district is 93% Green Belt, but that doesn’t remove a householder’s right to put panels on the roof.
What is Epping Forest council doing about climate change?
Epping Forest District Council declared a climate emergency in September 2019, with the goal of a carbon-neutral district by 2030. Its 2023 action plan promotes the Solar Together group-buying scheme and says solar panels have helped cut the council’s own emissions.
How much will solar panels produce in Chigwell?
For a Chigwell roof facing south at a 35° tilt, PVGIS models about 4,027 kWh annually from 4kW of panels. Output is best in July, at around 489 kWh, and drops to about 142 kWh in December. That trails Brentwood and Harlow slightly but is still roughly 10% above a similar roof in Durham.
How much could solar save in Chigwell?
Chigwell bills are set by the Eastern cap, 26.61p a kWh in autumn 2026. Using 40–60% of the generation in the house and exporting the balance at 13p a unit makes 4kW of panels worth about £745–£850 annually, so a £6,490 install is recovered in roughly 7.6–8.7 years.
Final Thoughts
In Chigwell, check the map first. If your home is on or near the High Road in the Chigwell Village conservation area, or it is listed, talk to Epping Forest’s planning team before booking surveys; in IG7 4, check with Redbridge instead. Elsewhere, most roofs can go ahead under permitted development.
Get at least three quotes, read each firm’s reviews in full, and compare their output estimates with the 4,027 kWh figure above.
