Goole Solar Guide: Flood-Zone Homes, Drax-Area Solar Farms & 10 Verified Installers
10 MCS-certified firms for Goole, Old Goole, Airmyn, Hook, Rawcliffe and Swinefleet.
Goole is a Victorian port town on the Ouse, and its skyline is still the two listed water towers locals call the salt and pepper pots, built in 1885 and 1927. It also lives with flood risk: East Riding’s planners put 96.4% of it in Flood Zone 3, behind the Humber and Ouse defences. And the land around it, towards Howden and Drax, now has two nationally significant solar farms with consent.
This guide is written for Goole. A 4kW roof here is estimated to produce 3,824 kWh a year, and at Yorkshire price-cap rates each unit you use yourself saves 25.60p. Only three MCS solar firms are based in the town itself, so the ten below also include installers from Selby, Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, the Isle of Axholme, Doncaster and Scunthorpe, each checked against the MCS listings and its own site or register entries.

Solar in Goole by the numbers
These figures are modelled for Goole itself. A 4kW system facing south at 35° is estimated to produce 3,824 kWh a year, climbing to about 482 kWh in May and falling to 124 kWh in December.
- 3,824 kWh / yearEstimated output of a 4kW roof system in Goole
- 25.60p per kWhPrice-cap unit rate for Goole’s region (Yorkshire), Oct–Dec 2026, vs 26.32p GB average
- £390–£585 off your billIf you use 40–60% of what the panels make at home
- + £200–£300 export incomeThe rest sold at 13p/kWh on an open Smart Export Guarantee tariff
That works out at roughly £690–£785 a year, repaying a £6,490 system in about 8.3–9.4 years. Goole’s open, flat setting beside the Ouse gives good output for Yorkshire, only about 2% below Beverley.
Sources: output from the EU’s PVGIS 5.3 model (SARAH-3 data) for Goole, 4kW, 35° south-facing, roof-mounted, 14% system losses. Unit rate from Ofgem’s price cap for 1 Oct–31 Dec 2026. Export rate: Fuse Energy Single Rate Variable, September 2026. Installed cost: Sunsave, August 2026. Your own figures will depend on roof direction, shading and how much electricity you use in daylight.

Planning and grid connection in Goole
- Goole Town conservation areaDesignated in November 2011, it covers about 192 properties in the Victorian town centre. Panels on a wall or roof facing a highway here are not permitted development.
- Listed dock buildingsGoole has about 31 listed buildings, including the Grade II* boat hoist on South Dock and both Grade II water towers, the 1885 brick tower and the 1927 concrete one. Listed buildings need consent for panels.

- Northern PowergridGoole is on Northern Powergrid’s Yorkshire network. Most home systems are notified after installation (G98); larger ones need approval first (G99).

Solar Panels Funded
MCS networkResidential & commercialFunding specialists
Solar Panels Funded is a Birmingham-based solar intermediary at Digbeth Court Business Centre, 162–164 High Street, Birmingham, B12 0LD. It doesn’t install panels itself; it matches Goole homeowners with MCS-accredited installers from its network, so one enquiry brings back several quotes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install solar panels in Goole’s flood zone?
Yes. Flood risk doesn’t block roof panels, and East Riding’s own figures put 96.4% of the town in Flood Zone 3, so nearly every Goole installation is in one. The practical step is to keep the inverter, battery and isolators well above ground level, ideally upstairs or high on a wall, not in a garage, cellar or outbuilding. The Humber tidal defences and the Swinefleet embankment scheme reduce the risk but don’t remove it.
Is there any grant for solar in Goole?
Not for most private homes at the moment. The £1.5 million Warm Homes: Local Grant allocation for the East Riding is being used, alongside E.ON, on roughly 600 social-housing upgrades that include solar, according to a council announcement in June 2026. We found no open application route for owner-occupiers in Goole. Parts of DN14 fall under North Yorkshire or Doncaster councils, so check with those if your address is there.
Can I put panels on a house in Goole town centre?
Usually on the rear. The Goole Town conservation area, designated in 2011, covers about 192 properties in the Victorian centre, and there the street-facing roof slopes and front elevations are off limits for panels without planning permission. The water towers and South Dock buildings are listed, but ordinary houses nearby are only affected if they are listed too.
What solar farms are being built near Goole?
Two nationally significant ones have been consented nearby. East Yorkshire Solar Farm, about 1.4km north-west of Howden, was granted in May 2025 and will connect to the grid at Drax substation. The Helios solar and storage project, south-west of Camblesforth near Drax, was granted in December 2025. A third, Fenwick near Doncaster, was still awaiting a decision when we checked.
How much will panels generate in Goole?
For Goole, PVGIS models around 3,824 kWh annually from four kilowatts of south-facing panels at a 35° tilt. That is only about 2% below Beverley and around 4% above Durham. May is the best month at about 482 kWh, and December gives around 124 kWh.
What will solar save a Goole household?
Goole households pay Yorkshire cap rates of 25.60p per kWh this autumn. Consuming 40–60% of what a 4kW system generates and selling the rest at 13p brings in around £690–£785 a year, enough to cover a £6,490 system in 8.3–9.4 years.
Why are so few solar installers based in Goole?
It’s a small town with only three MCS-certified solar firms: Marritt Electrical, Elite Solar and R Smith Electrical & Mechanical. Most of the other installers who work here come from Selby, Doncaster, Scunthorpe and the Isle of Axholme, 12–30 miles away, so it is worth asking each how quickly they can survey and return for aftercare.
Final Thoughts
In Goole, plan for water as well as sunshine. Nearly every home is in Flood Zone 3, so ask each installer where the inverter and battery will go. If you are in the town-centre conservation area or a listed building, check with East Riding planning first.
Get at least three quotes, including one from a Goole-based firm, and compare each installer’s output estimate for your roof with the 3,824 kWh figure above.
