Maldon Solar Guide: Hythe Quay Barges, Blackwater Tides & 10 Verified Installers
10 MCS-certified firms for Maldon, Heybridge, Heybridge Basin, Great Totham, Tollesbury, Woodham Walter and the Tolleshunts.
Maldon sits where the Chelmer meets the Blackwater, and Hythe Quay is still home port to around 10–15 surviving Thames sailing barges, with Cooks Yard building and repairing them. The town has made sea salt since 1882, and the Byrhtnoth statue on the Promenade Walk marks the Battle of Maldon in 991. Heybridge, across the river, joined the borough in 1934.
Here a 4kW roof is estimated to produce 4,216 kWh a year, and every unit you use instead of buying saves 26.61p at the Eastern price cap. The ten MCS-certified installers below were checked against the MCS listings, their own websites and Companies House where possible. Five are within about six and a half miles of the town; the other five work from Wickford and Rochford, roughly 10–11 miles away.

Solar in Maldon by the numbers
We ran PVGIS for central Maldon with a 4kW array on a south-pitched roof at a 35° tilt. It comes out at 4,216 kWh a year, with the best month, July, giving about 508 kWh and December only 147 kWh.
- 4,216 kWh / yearEstimated output of a 4kW roof system in Maldon
- 26.61p per kWhPrice-cap unit rate for Maldon’s region (Eastern), Oct–Dec 2026, vs 26.32p GB average
- £450–£675 off your billIf you use 40–60% of what the panels make at home
- + £220–£330 export incomeThe rest sold at 13p/kWh on an open Smart Export Guarantee tariff
Put against Eastern prices, that is roughly £780–£890 a year, so a £6,490 system should clear its cost in about 7.3–8.3 years. Maldon edges ahead of Chelmsford but trails Colchester and Burnham-on-Crouch slightly.

Export rate: Fuse Energy Single Rate Variable, September 2026. Installed cost: Sunsave, August 2026. Your own figures will depend on roof direction, shading and how much electricity you use in daylight.

Planning and grid connection in Maldon
- Maldon town Article 4 directionsMaldon District Council lists two Article 4 directions in the Maldon conservation area: one for Church Street, North Street, The Hythe and Tenterfield Road, and one for Butt Lane and Victoria Road. The documents are scanned, so we couldn’t confirm what they cover. If you live on these streets, ask the council before fitting panels on a front roof slope.
- Woodham Walter Article 4The Woodham Walter conservation area direction, confirmed in June 2017, removes permitted development rights for changes to front roof slopes, which it says includes installing a microgeneration unit. Panels on the front of homes there need planning permission.
- Conservation areas and listed buildingsThe council lists 15 conservation areas, including Maldon, Heybridge Basin, Langford, Goldhanger, Tollesbury, Tolleshunt D’Arcy and the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. Listed buildings such as the Moot Hall and St Mary’s on Hythe Quay, both Grade I, show how much heritage the town has. Listed homes always need consent for panels.
- Permitted development elsewhereAway from these areas, most houses can add roof panels without applying, provided they sit no more than 200mm proud of the slope and stay below the ridge.
- UK Power NetworksMaldon falls in UK Power Networks’ Eastern area, though we haven’t confirmed this for every postcode. For a typical home array, your installer registers it with the network once it is running (G98). Bigger systems need sign-off before work starts (G99).

Solar Panels Funded
MCS networkResidential & commercialFunding specialists
Solar Panels Funded is a Birmingham-based solar intermediary at Digbeth Court Business Centre, 162–164 High Street, Birmingham, B12 0LD. It doesn’t install panels itself; it matches Maldon homeowners with MCS-accredited installers from its network, so one enquiry brings back several quotes.
Because few MCS firms are based in CM9 itself, it can save Maldon households from ringing round Chelmsford, Wickford and Rochford. It can also check early whether a home in the old town or Woodham Walter needs planning permission first.
Best for One enquiry → multiple competitive quotes from vetted MCS-accredited installers.

Innasol
MCSNAPIT
Innasol Super Power One trades as Innasol from Hatfield Peverel and installs solar PV, battery storage and ETA biomass boilers. Its MCS listing gives a Maldon-code phone number.

Best for Farms and larger rural roofs.
Newhaven Solar Limited
MCSNAPITREA
Newhaven Solar calls itself an Essex-based solar energy company and installs solar PV, batteries and EV charge points for businesses and householders, with maintenance. It shows NAPIT and REA logos on its site.

Frequently Asked Questions
What grant help is there for solar in Maldon?
Maldon takes part in HEAT Essex, the county’s Warm Homes scheme, delivered by Happy Energy Solutions in partnership with Essex County Council. It can pay for solar PV with a battery, heat pumps, insulation or storage heaters, subject to a survey and cost caps. Eligibility depends on income, health and the home’s energy rating, not just benefits. When we checked on 13 October 2026, HEAT Essex said it was oversubscribed for now and that applications on hold remain valid; call 01206 326808. Maldon District Council’s own grants page still says the scheme hasn’t launched, so go to HEAT Essex directly.
Do I need permission for panels in Maldon’s old town or Woodham Walter?
In Woodham Walter, yes, if the panels face the street: its 2017 Article 4 direction removes the right to alter a front roof slope, including fitting a microgeneration unit. In Maldon town, Article 4 directions cover the conservation area around The Hythe, Church Street, North Street and Tenterfield Road, and around Butt Lane and Victoria Road. Their scanned wording doesn’t clearly show whether solar is included, so ask Maldon District Council before putting panels on a front slope there.
How does Maldon’s solar output compare with nearby towns?
PVGIS gives a 4kW south-facing roof in Maldon about 4,216 kWh a year, a little more than Chelmsford (4,131 kWh) and slightly less than Colchester (4,249 kWh) or Burnham-on-Crouch (4,364 kWh) on the Dengie coast. Output peaks in July at about 508 kWh and drops to 147 kWh in December.
How much could a Maldon home save with solar?
Maldon households pay 26.61p a unit on the Eastern cap this quarter, and that is what each self-used solar unit saves. If the home uses roughly half its output (we allow 40–60%) and exports the balance at 13p, a 4kW system brings in about £780–£890 a year, enough to clear a £6,490 bill in roughly 7.3–8.3 years.
Are there big solar schemes planned around Maldon?
Lightsource bp has proposed a 49.9MW solar farm on about 190 acres at Lodge Farm, Woodham Walter, and Hall Farm, Woodham Mortimer, which it says could power 14,658 homes. It held a community event in January 2026, but we found no planning decision, so it is still a proposal. In town, an application for panels on the Blackwater Leisure Centre roof went to planning committee with an approval recommendation in October 2025. In Heybridge, the Heybridge Climate Action Partnership, launched in 2022, lists solar for homes and public buildings among its aims.
Is flood risk a concern for solar in Heybridge Basin?
The roof panels themselves are rarely the issue. The Environment Agency has a flood warning area for the Blackwater estuary at Heybridge, covering the north bank from Goldhanger to Maldon, including Heybridge Basin, and another for the south bank from Maldon to Maylandsea. If your home is in one of these, ask for the inverter and any battery to go upstairs or high on a wall rather than in a garage at ground level.
Why are some of these installers so far from Maldon?
Only one firm on our list, PFL Electrical at Mundon, has a CM9 address, and a number of closer MCS firms already feature in our other Essex guides. JR Revell, Danbury Electrical, Innasol and Sol Fuel are between three and six and a half miles out. The remaining five sit in Wickford and Rochford, 10–11 miles off as the crow flies and further by car because the Crouch has to be skirted. Before you sign, ask the more distant firms how soon they can survey and how fast they respond to faults.
Final Thoughts
In Maldon, start by checking your street. In Woodham Walter’s conservation area, front-slope panels need planning permission, and around The Hythe, Church Street and Victoria Road it is worth asking the council first. Elsewhere in CM9, most roofs can go ahead under permitted development.
Get at least three quotes, ideally one from a firm within a few miles and one from the Wickford or Rochford group. Compare each estimate with the 4,216 kWh figure above.
